The Sherman Antitrust Act, a basic federal enactment regulating
the operations of corporate trusts, was passed by the U.S. Congress
in July 1890, The act declared illegal "every contract, combination
in the form of trust or otherwise, or conspiracy, in restraint of
trade or commerce among the several States, or with foreign nations."
The Clayton Antitrust Act was passed by the United States Congress
in 1914 to prohibit certain monopolistic practices then common in
finance, industry, and trade. The act covers corporate activities,
remedies for reform, and labor disputes. The provisions relating
to corporate activities declared illegal such practices as local
price-cutting to freeze out competitors, exclusive selling or leasing,
and other forms of price discrimination.
These acts make it illegal for any printer manufacturer to require
you to use any particular brand of supplies. An OEM (Original Equipment
Manufacturer), or any other manufacturer, cannot void your printer
warranty because you decided to use products they do not endorse.
To enforce such policies is a direct violation of the Sherman &
Clayton Antitrust Acts.
